VLA Appoints Alistair Deakin as Executive Director
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 1, 2026
Burlington, Vermont — Vermont Legal Aid (VLA), a statewide nonprofit dedicated to advancing justice and protecting the rights of vulnerable Vermonters, is pleased to announce the appointment of Alistair Deakin as its new executive director.
A seasoned executive, attorney and nonprofit leader, Deakin brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across civil justice, human services, public policy and mission-driven organizations. He has led complex, multi-stakeholder organizations and built a reputation for strengthening institutions, advancing equity-centered missions and fostering high-performing, inclusive cultures.
Deakin’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Vermont Legal Aid as the organization continues to expand access to justice while navigating evolving legal, economic and social challenges across the state.
Leadership rooted in mission and impact
Deakin’s career has consistently centered on strengthening organizations that serve vulnerable populations. He has led organizations ranging from national human services technology platforms to nonprofit consulting and advisory firms, guiding them through growth, transformation and long-term sustainability.
His early legal career included direct service work with Atlanta Legal Aid, where he supported clients facing housing instability, access to benefits and family security challenges — experiences that shaped his enduring commitment to access to justice.
“Alistair brings a rare combination of strategic leadership, financial acumen and deep mission alignment,” said Jessica Oski, chair of the Vermont Legal Aid Board of Trustees. “His ability to lead through complexity while staying grounded in values makes him exceptionally well-suited to guide Vermont Legal Aid into its next chapter.”
“I have spent much of my career building and strengthening organizations that serve people in moments of vulnerability,” Deakin said. “I am inspired by the opportunity to work alongside Vermont Legal Aid’s dedicated staff, partners and communities to ensure that all Vermonters, regardless of income or circumstance, have access to high-quality legal advocacy.”
Strategic vision for the future
Under Deakin’s leadership, Vermont Legal Aid will focus on strengthening its role as a statewide leader in civil legal services through a strategic and forward-looking approach that includes:
- Expanding Access to Justice: Enhancing service delivery models to reach more Vermonters, particularly in rural and underserved communities
- Strengthening Organizational Sustainability: Diversifying funding streams and reinforcing long-term financial stability
- Investing in People and Culture: Supporting staff development, retention, and well-being in a high-impact, mission-driven environment
- Leveraging Innovation and Technology: Exploring thoughtful use of technology to improve client access, efficiency and outcomes
- Deepening Partnerships and Advocacy: Strengthening collaboration with community organizations, policymakers and stakeholders to address systemic barriers
Deakin’s background in organizational strategy, fundraising, governance and systems-level impact positions him to lead Vermont Legal Aid through an increasingly complex landscape while preserving its core mission and values.
